Unregelmäßig gebräunt. Verso etwas Papierverlust. Rouault begann seine Karriere vor dem Studium der Malerei als Entwurfszeichner für Glasfenster, was sich in seinem späteren Werk stilistisch widerspiegelt. 1903 gehörte er, u. a. neben Matisse, zu den Begründern des "Salon d'Automne". Im Jahr 1913 nahm ihn der Kunsthändler Ambroise Vollard exklusiv unter Vertrag.
