Astrid Klein studierte bis 1977 an der Fachhochschule für Kunst und Design in Köln. Von 1993 bis 2017 hatte sie eine Professur für Bildende Kunst an der Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst in Leipzig inne. In den 1970er Jahren wurde sie vor allem durch ihre großformatigen schwarzweiß-Fotoarbeiten und ihre raumgreifenden Installationen bekannt, die sich aus vorgefundenem Bild- und Textmaterial sowie gezeichneten und gemalten Elementen zusammensetzten.
